In parting shot, John Kerry tears into Israel over settlements

WASHINGTON: US secretary of state John Kerry tore into Israel on Wednesday for settlement-building, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of dragging Israel away from democracy and forcefully rejecting the notion that America had abandoned Israel with a controversial UN vote. Netanyahu accused the Obama administration of a biased bid to blame Israel for failure to reach a peace deal.

In a farewell speech, Kerry laid out a two-state vision for peace that he won't be in office to implement, but that the US hoped might be heeded even after President Barack Obama's term ends. He defended Obama's move last week to allow the UN Security Council to declare Israeli settlements illegal, the spark that set off an extraordinary and deepening diplomatic spat between the US and its closest Mideast ally.

"If the choice is one state, Israel can either be Jewish or democratic, it cannot be both, and it won't ever really be at peace," Kerry said in a speech that ran more than an hour, a comprehensive airing of grievances that have built up in the Obama administration over eight years but were rarely, until this month, discussed publicly.

Netanyahu pushed back in a hastily arranged televised statement in which he suggested he was done with the Obama administration and ready to deal with President-elect Donald Trump, who has sided squarely with Israel. The Israeli leader faulted Kerry for obsessing over settlements while paying mere "lip service" to Palestinian attacks and incitement of violence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's charkha photograph was shot at a Ludhiana event

LUDHIANA: The photograph of PM Narendra Modi spinning a charkha which was used by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) on its 2017 calendar sparking a controversy, was shot at an event in Ludhiana in October last year. The organisers had even distributed charkhas to women from poor families at the event, but many of them no longer work, leaving the women dismayed.

Modi had visited Ludhiana on October 18 for an event organized by the micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) ministry. He had sat with the women on stage and spun the charkha, creating the photo opportunity. In addition to awarding entrepreneurs, some 500 charkhas were given to rural women to make them self-sufficient. According to the organisers, the charkha was to add Rs 150 to their daily income. Modi had told the gathering that the original slogan was 'Khadi for nation', but it should now be 'Khadi for fashion'. TOI visited Littran village in Jalandhar where about 20 of the 500 charkhas were distributed. At least four of the women said that their charkhas were faulty and claimed that most of the other women had also packed up their wheels as they couldn't spin anything on them.

Kulwinder Kaur has preserved her 'Modi charkha', as she calls it, in a cardboard box. A skilled worker with almost 30 years of experience, she prefers her 20-year-old charkha which works just fine. She pulls out the Modi charkha for a demonstration, but when she tries to spin it, the wheel jams and the wooden structure makes a screeching sound.

She chuckles and says, "Hun dasso, ehda achaar pana? (What should I do with this, make pickle out of it?) Wouldn't it have been better to give us some money instead? The charkhas given to us in Ludhiana during the programme looked the same but were of superior quality .This one seems to be a cheaper version."

US-led forces dropped 3 bombs/hour in 2016

President Barack Obama, who will leave office on January 20 after eight years in the Oval Office came into the limelight as a rookie Senator way back in 2002 when he announced he was "opposed to dumb wars," referring to the planned invasion of Iraq by then President George W Bush.Six years later, with the US neck deep in the quagmire of war, Obama was voted into office by a hopeful US electorate that the steady stream of body bags coming in from different war zones would end. He even got the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, mainly on the basis of his peaceful intentions.

A look at Obama's eight years shows that American troop casualties have indeed gone down but the US is currently involved in more wars than in those frantic post-911 years under George Bush. The difference is that these are wars in which very low numbers of soldiers are on the ground. Deadly drone strikes and, if push comes to shove, air strikes are doing the job.So -no body bags coming back. The casualties are all on the other side.

An analysis of the " Airpower Summary", released by US Air Force Central Command in December 2016 shows that US-led western forces dropped over 32,000 bombs in 2016 alone. That's three bombs every hour all of 2016.

These bombs were released from drones as well as bomber aircraft functioning from military bases and several carrier vessels located in seas nearby.US air operations are currently ongoing in seven countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan. In Bush's time the US was not involved in bombing Yemen and Libya.
